Why Ascension Parish Is Phasing Out the Old Emergency Sirens

For decades, outdoor emergency sirens have been an important part of emergency preparedness in Ascension Parish. But as technology continues to evolve, so does the way we communicate during an emergency.

Ascension Parish is phasing out the old emergency sirens and transitioning to a modern digital and analog emergency notification system designed to reach residents through multiple communication channels.

The new system will use technologies including Everbridge, IPAWS (Integrated Public Alert and Warning System), and Resident Connection to provide emergency information directly to residents. Notifications can reach smartphones, landlines, digital television and analog television, helping ensure important warnings can reach people wherever they are.

More Ways to Receive an Emergency Alert

Unlike traditional sirens, which are primarily designed to alert people outdoors, the new system provides multiple ways for residents to receive emergency information. This gives Ascension Parish and its emergency response partners greater flexibility to communicate important information before, during and after an emergency.

The transition is being coordinated by Ascension CAER, the Ascension Parish Office of Homeland Security and community partners, including local industry and law enforcement.

The goal is simple: give residents more reliable ways to receive critical information when it matters most.

The transition to the new system is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. Residents should stay informed, learn about the new notification options and make sure their contact information is up to date.

Emergency preparedness starts with knowing how you will receive an alert. Stay informed. Stay connected. Stay safe, Ascension Parish.
